After about 10 years of working at CVS Pharmacy, Pharmacist Jay Martino decided to begin his own venture.
Born and raised in Morganton, Martino worked three years as a pharmacy tech at CVS before going to pharmacy school. Upon graduation, he returned to the store on North Green Street where he later would serve as the pharmacy manager – a position he held for seven years.
Thanks partly to encouragement from friends in the financial world, it was made possible for Martino to open his own shop, Jay’s Hometown Pharmacy, located at 612 S. Sterling St. “They had some extra cash … They just kind of convinced me about the benefits of going in on your own,” Martino said. “I’m still young, I still have the energy to try to grow a business … Now that it’s mine, I can give back to the community more than what I was allowed to do with the corporate job.”
Martino said he enjoyed working at CVS and was happy there, but decided to make the most of the opportunity. “In all honesty, for me, it’s being here in Morganton and being able to help the community,” Martino said. “I love being back here … to be able to watch families … grow up in the community I grew up in.”
Martino, 32, and his wife, Mailee, have chosen to raise their family in Morganton, as the two have three boys: Gavin, 5, Elliot, 3, and Evan, 16 months.
In addition to medications, Martino’s pharmacy, which is called Jay’s Hometown Pharmacy, will sell over-the-counter medications, walkers and other items. Martino said he has found the perfect spot and will have a grand-opening in about a month.
For now, Martino has two pharmacy techs: Heather Helton, who has 16 years of experience and worked with him at CVS; and Ger Yang, who has two or three years of experience.
One thing Martino enjoys doing now that he owns his own store is donating $500 worth of over-the-counter medications for two doctors who go to Haiti.
“Now I’m able to do that a little more freely,” Martino said. “It’s a lot easier to do that from a business (when you own it.)”
